Three ways of understanding the phenomenon of immortality are considered: philosophical-anthropological, scientific and literary-artistic. On the basis of the essential features of given species, the forms of ethics corresponding to them are established. As a result, it is concluded that there is a fundamental difference between the three kinds of immortality and their corresponding forms of ethics. In the first two kinds, we are talking about a ‘humanist ethics of afterlife’, whereas the third kind of artistic projection of immortality presupposes a special type of ethics of ‘value indifference’. The fundamental difference between ‘afterlife’ and ‘immortality’ is that the ethics of immortality presupposes the real presence of the subject (homo immortalis) in the moral situation, whereas the ethics of postmortem (like its digital counterpart) is based on the regulation of the relationship between the subject (the quality of a separate individual or individual legal entity) and a spiritual (digital, informational) double of the deceased person who is not an interactive entity. The ethical analysis of Borges’ novel The Immortal allows us to choose as the value basis of the subject’s life of immortality the ethics of “value indifference” (Wertindifferenzethik), the foundations of which were laid by Nicolas Hartmann. As Hartman has shown ‘value indifference’ is by no means indifferent to virtue and vice, but on the contrary, binds them by certain laws of value opposites. One such law shows that the lower layer of values, based on the commandment “thou shalt not kill”), is indifferent to being the basis for higher values. The value basis of the Immortals’ behavior will be determined by the fact that lower values are not authentically moral for them, but become value-neutral, since the motivation for their actions is not related to violating the prohibitions of killing, stealing, lying, etc., which have been repeated endlessly in their past and are bound to repeat themselves. in the future. This pattern manifests itself also in the digital value space, with respect to the digital afterlife, since the lower value norm of “do not kill” does not apply here.
