For this purpose, the city was power, population, history, communication and cultural resource. Trade, productivity, university, museums, and parks were post-industrial features in elementary school books and mostly absent from the descriptions of Russian notion what the ‘city’ might look like. The transition to the modern city image went via the industrialization of the life of large populationgroups: in textbooks it was manifested as a topic of comfort and convenience to live in a city. In Russia it was firstly shown only towards the two capitals – the newone (St.-Petersburg) and the oldone (Moscow). In Germany it was made through widening the abstract city model applicable to every town. The English textbooks known to the popular Russian authors didn’t depict the urban image as it was recognized and understood in the UK.
