Schavelev SPIRITUAL AND PRACTICAL VALUE OF RELIGION: REVIEW OF PHILOSOPHICAL AND HISTORICAL ASSESSMENTS The paper formulates the principles of social and political evaluation of religion and the Church in the Soviet Union and Russia in the 1990s - 2010s. According to communists religion is outdated, and the church reaction. Variations of a negative assessment of the church in different periods of the history of the Soviet state does not change this fact. Russian "perestroika" overestimates the religion and the church positively. Religion returns its status as a symbol of national culture and synonym of morality. The paper analizes the struggle between canonical and skeptical tendencies on the subject in nodays Russia. Different criteria for approval and denial of faith in God (empirical, theoretical and psychological) are classified. Thus the problem of religious belief is included in the context of social epistemology. Keywords: religion, values, knowledge, atheism, clericalism, humanism.
