ФИЛОЛОГИЯ № 3, 2005 У. A. Bogatova RHYTHMS INPROSE Rhythm is, by definition, a series, or the effect of a series, of equal, or approximately equal, or seemingly equal, events in time. Both verse and prose possess rhythm, but these rhythms are different. English verse is the result of an adjustment of the acoustical characteristics of the language to the definite or predetermined metrical pattern. In prose the concept of rhythm is extended beyond its strict definition to include the flow of sounds, the alteration and balance of ideas or feelings or syntactical arrangements. Thus, in verse the metrical predominates, while in prose the grammatical or rhetorical predomi nates. Prose rhythm is not only the beauty of language but a signature of the writer’s integrity and ideas. Литература 1. Гиршман, М. М. Ритм художественной прозы: Моногр. / М. М. Гиршман.- М., 1982. 2.
